Item Abilities

Items have various abilities that characters can use (mostly) in battles. Some are active, adding defensive or supportive properties to characters, and others are active, giving the character options to select as main actions in battle. You can view a list of Abilities and their descriptions in-game from the Status Menu, though it includes some Abilities that exist in the game's code but are not actually available in the game. Abililities of items equipped in the wrong slot have no effect.

Ability Slots

All items have four Ability Slots that may or may not contain abilities. Items' Ability Slots can either be released or unreleased. If an Ability Slot containing an Ability is released, it appears on the item's Ability list in the menu and the Ability can be used in battle. If an Ability Slot is unreleased, it will not appear on the item in the menu, and the Ability cannot be used until it is released. When a character has an item equipped and wears it into battle (receiving a battle command; reaching their action during the turn is not required), there is a chance of releasing an unreleased Ability Slot at the end of battle, even if the item is equipped in the wrong slot. Ability Slots can also be released at the Blacksmith. Abilities are only ever hidden by being unreleased; Abilities are never permanently lost or missing.

Items that appear in normal shops or treasure chests always have a random number of Ability Slots released. The number of Ability Slots released increases the price of the item (for both selling and buying). When crafting new items at the blacksmith, the resulting item will have the same number of Ability Slots released as the item used as the base ingredient, though this can be modified if the blacksmith manages to release an extra ability or botches and unreleases an ability during creation. Items you receive in trade from the wandering Chapas in Armic's Scenario will have the same number of Ability Slots released as the item you traded away.

Releasing Abilities

All items have four Ability Slots and Ability Slots can be flagged as released or unreleased even if the item does not have Abilities in the slots. Ability Slots always release in order from top to bottom (first to fourth) as they appear on the item in the menu. The first ability on an item is always released and cannot become unreleased even through failure at the blacksmith. In battle, Ability Slots release less frequently the further down the list they are. When releasing an Ability Slot in battle where an item does not have an actual Ability, there will be no notification that the release has occurred. At the blacksmith, you can tell if you have released an Ability Slot because the blacksmith will say, "Now we're talking!" when presenting the final product. Trial and error at the blacksmith is the only way to confirm whether an Ability Slot where there is no Ability is actually released.

Abilities release more easily in battle when fighting Treasure Slimes. Abilities release more easily at the blacksmith when using harmonious materials. Abilities are more likely to be lost on items when using two materials that are not harmonious.

Customizing Abilities

Shields, Accessories, and all three types of Armor have a set four Abilities based on the material they are made out of. Weapons' Abilities are based on the item's weight rank, which can be different per item based on the items used during crafting at the blacksmith. Weapons from shops and treasures have the Ability Set of the weight rank that matches the weight of the material of which they are made. It is also possible to add Magic Arts abilities to Weapons, Shields, or Accessories at the blacksmith. For more information on customizing Abilities on equipment, see the Blacksmithing section.

Head, Body, and Leg Armor have set Abilities in their four Ability Slots based on the material they are made out of and cannot be changed through the blacksmith. There are some unique Armors that have different Abilities than normal for their material type. The only way to actually customize the Abilities of Armor is through Chapa Trading in Armic's Scenario.

Using Abilites on the Map

Some Abilities can be used on the map. The Martial Arts Abilities (Punch, Kick, and Throw) innate to all characters can be used on treasures as a method to open them bypassing all locks and traps on the chest. Magic Arts abilities can be used to access Arts of their respective element. Herbs' special ability Life Restorer can be used only on the map to restore HP and LP to a character. The Locksmith Ability from Key items attempts unlocking a door with a reel check. Keys can only be used with certain doors; there are no skeleton keys that work on all doors.

Other than those few exceptions, abilities only have use in battle.

Weapon Abilities

For more inforamtion on Weapon Abilities and the Weapon Arts they give access to, see the Weapon Arts page. For more information on customizing Weapons to have a desired Ability set, see the Blacksmithing page.

Also note that parrying abilities only work if the Weapon is equipped in the second weapon slot.

List most abilities, Nullification Abilities only have effect in battle, so Null Poison will not guarantee immunity to the Poison status caused by Poison Traps on Treasures.

Magic Arts Abilities

Magic Arts abilities that channel Magic Arts grant the option to use any Magic Arts that a character knows in battle or on the map. To use Magic Arts in battle, select the item with Magic Arts on it, and all known Arts of the respective element will be avaialable as battle commands. To use Magic Arts on the map, open the Skill menu and select the item with Magic Arts on it. The Arts the character knows of the respective element will be available from within the item's submenu this way as long as a valid target for them is highlighted.

Magic Support abilities slightly boost the HP damage or HP recovery effect of Magic Arts of their respective element in battle. Multiple items with the same Support Ability equipped to the same character will grant additional boosts per item, but only up to the 6th item. Having a seventh item with the identical Support Ability will not give any additional boost. This only applies to identical abilities; having seven items equipped with varying elements' Support Abilities will grant a boost for each item equipped.

Evasion Abilities

Evasion Abilities are unique to Shields. The Abilities allow Shields to block incoming attacks of their respective types. If the abilities are not released, the Shield cannot block attacks of those properties. All Shields can block at least Slashing and Bludgeoning attacks, and most Shields can block Piercing attacks, as well.

While an Ice Evasion Ability exists in the game's code that allows blocking of Cold attacks, it is impossible to obtain in the game and will not be listed below.

Barrier Abilities

Barrier abilities modify the amount of HP damage dealt from attacks of their respective properties. There are four types of Barrier Abilities: the double circle ◎ which provides great defenses against the property; the circle ○ which provides defense against the property; the triangle ▲ which lowers defense against the property; and the cross × which greatly lowers defense against the property.

The Status Barrier ability reduces the likelihood of the wearer being inflicted with status effects during battle.

While Barrier Abilities of all four types exist for all seven types of damage and status effects in the game's code, few are actually utilized and most are impossible to obtain in the game. There are actually no cross Barrier Abilities in the game, and only one triangle type. Only the ones available in the game will be listed below.

Ability Description Items

Life Protection

Life Protection is an important ability that reduces the likelihood of taking LP damage. When an item with the Life Protection Ability is equipped, there is a 5% chance to ignore each point of LP damage inflicted upon the wearer. This effect can be stacked by equipping up to five total items with Life Protection for a total 25% chance to ignore LP damage. Life Protection is mostly found only on Body Armor and a few Accessories, though some unique items possess the Ability on Head and Leg Armor.
