Magic Tablets
Magic Tablets are required to study Magic Arts. Magic Tablets can be found in pre-determined locations on certain maps, as pre-determined treasures on certain maps, or dropped by Leader Monsters, though their drop rate is fairly rare. Tablets picked up as treasures or items on the map and most Tablets dropped by Leader Monsters will be Level 1 or Level 2 of a random element, except for Forbidden. Tablets dropped by the three Treasure Slime monsters have a chance of being any level and will have a random element except for Forbidden. The special monster Rainbow Guckie will only drop Tablets of the Forbidden type, and may drop any level. Tablet drops higher than Level 2 are quite rare.
Magic Tablet Limitations
You can hold a total of 3 Magic Tablets awaiting placement at a time. If you have three in your inventory, monsters will not drop them and you will not be able to pick them up from the map. All Magic Tablets you are carrying will be available for placement when you reach the next Growth Panel screen. Tablets are placed onto characters' Growth Panel as Skill Panels. Once a Tablet is placed as a Skill Panel, it is removed from the inventory. If you don't place a Magic Tablet on a character as a Skill Panel when it is available on the Growth Panel screen, the tablet will be destroyed. As long as you never reach the Growth Panel screen, you will retain Magic Tablets indefinitely, meaning you can keep Magic Tablets you found even when you fail an adventure. Once Tablets are placed on a character, they can only be removed by replacing the panel with another, and the Tablet is destroyed, so Tablets can not be swapped between characters.
Farming Magic Tablets
The level and element of a Magic Tablet are determined at the moment the Tablet is placed in the inventory, not at the Growth Panel screen. If you want to farm for certain tablets by reloading the game, you must load to a saved game before picking up a Magic Tablet to re-randomize which one you get. Because you can keep Magic Tablets when you fail an adventure, it is possible to save before going on an adventure with many treasures such as Titan's Flute or Leith Torles's Tower and try to collect Tablets there, purposely failing the adventure. After failing the adventure, save the game in a separate save slot, then clear an adventure that can be cleared quickly and easily such as Cemetery solely to check which Tablets you received. If you got Tablets you want to keep, load the save after failing the long adventure and resume playing normally from there,, so you will have the Tablets in your inventory and can place them at the next Growth Panel screen. If you did not get Tablets you wanted, you can load the original save and try again. You can repeat this before every adventure until you get Tablets you want to place every single adventure. The process is extremely tedious and only recommended if you are dire to have a specific Tablet or Magic Art.
Earning Study Points
For basic information on how to learn Magic Arts from Magic Tablets, see the Primer section. You can influence the rate at which you earn Study Points at the end of battle by paying attention to the elemental field. Each Magic Art on each Magic Tablet has a particular Field Bonus. The number of Study Points you acquire in battle is determined by the strength of the Field Bonus's element in the elemental field at the end of battle.
If the dominant element in the elemental field is the same as the field bonus for the Magic Art you choose to study, 5 Study Points will be applied toward learning the Art. Otherwise, only 1 Study Point will be allocated toward learning the Magic Art.
The elemental field is reflected in the Magic Reel during battle. The more reel panels of a certain elemental type, the stronger the field is at the moment.
The field starts in a certain condition at the beginning of every battle based on the location the battle is taking place in. Every space on the map has its own set elemental levels, so it's good to find locations where a certain element is particularly high to battle in to earn Study Points. You can also influence the elemental field during battle. Every time you use a Magic Art in battle, its respective element is boosted in the field, as well as the element that you landed the Reel on to use the art. Some Magic Arts can influence the Elemental Field directly, such as Rainbringer. Spending turns during battle to change the field can be cumbersome, so it's best to find locations where the desired element is already high.
Study Order
The Arts on Magic Tablets are in a set order as shown on the tables in the Magic Tablet List below. The first three Arts will be available to study when you first start studying a particular Tablet. After fully mastering an Art, the next three Arts on the list will become the next three available to study. So if you're wanting to get to the bottom of a long list more quickly, always study the third art available until you find the one you want. When the end of a list is reached, it wraps around back to the beginning of the list. Any Arts already known by the character studying the tablet are ignored and aren't part of the learning list. The Arcane Tongue Skill Panel reverses the order of Tablets' Art list.
